Entrepreneurship on The Web: Lessons From The World War
By Maneesh on Apr 16, 2008 in Entrepreneurship
There cannot be a better political case study in modern times than that of the Second World War. For most of it wasn’t fought on sheer military might than military and political strategy wars.
Now if you run a blog or a network of niche websites or something bigger, the World War can teach you lessons on how to make it successful. We all have seen that on the Internet it is not always about content.
At some point of time you all might have gone through a phase when no one seems to listen while you work your ass off on something that you know is mighty useful! Just like the number of soldiers and guns weren’t enough to win the war.
Sit, take a coffee and read through.
Alliance is Everything
The Allies and the Axis of Evil, it is important that you identify and network with people on the Web. More importantly as the war showed at the end it is important to connect with the right people. It is also important to give them their share. Germany was in the mood for expansion and not alliance. The Allies on the other hand were just scratching each others back. Who won?
Be fast, or you might have to share your loot.
When the war ended the city of Berlin was cut in half and a wall built across it. Imagine if either the Red Soviets or the US marched in and claimed the city before the other. Now imagine getting into the make money online niche (since that’s what most people get into these days) before it had thousands of other bloggers. If you are imagining the way we do it usually you will realize that entering first in a field has it’s distinct advantages.
Hanging on is perhaps the most important factor to change the rules of the game.
After routing France the Nazi army launched it’s famed Blitzkrieg on England. If one thing that characterized England during the days of constant bombing and enemy offensive it was resilience.
With scores of websites online it will never be easy for you to launch a site and set the web on fire. Ultimately it is those who last longer that takes the pie. If you feel distraught with your web ventures hang on. You might be changing the face of the game for all you know. Just like how Hitler decided it is pointless to break the UK anymore and went shopping east, which finally turned the tables on him.
Never break trust
When the little man went east he was breaking a pact. Russia and Germany had signed a non aggression deal and Hitler broke it when he invaded Russia. For all the might in numbers that the Allies had they couldn’t do much till the Soviet giant got pissed off. Who knows we would have had a totally different world today had the Nazis not got greedy. Lesson - don’t be greedy. Don’t break pacts. Alliances are built on trust and we already know alliance is everything.
Grab Opportunities
It was not just about the Pearl Harbor for the US. By the time the Second World War ended USA had become the wealthiest nation on the face of God’s green Earth. While the war was going on, USA could have kept itself out of the whole matter, it was essentially an European war going on. But it saw an opportunity in the war, that of money lending, of course the notoriety of the opponents gave it much needed moral base as well and the attack on Pearl Harbor was the final straw.
Look at opportunities on the web to make money, to scream out your brand. Grab premium domains in a yet to be tapped Top Level Domain, recognize fad from trend and make the most of both, seek guest blogging gigs on high profile blogs, the opportunities are limitless.
Everyone Needs Inspiration and Motivation
Winston Churchill was a master orator.
“If these great trials were to come upon our Island, there is a generation of Britons here now ready to prove itself not unworthy of the days of yore and not unworthy of those great men, the fathers of our land, who laid the foundations of our laws and shaped the greatness of our country. ”
His address to the nation from the House of Commons is widely regarded as amongst the best in war time speeches, but more importantly it led an entire through its darkest hours. We spoke of how resilience was their biggest strength. The Premier’s motivation might certainly have had its share in motivating to build this resilience. Keep yourself motivated and positive by reading and learning other’s experience.
Set a Contract of Terms Beforehand
Otherwise your Germany will be split. Most entrepreneurial ventures are usually partnerships. You need to team up with people who bring in different skills to the table. This would mean deciding beforehand how the profit will be divided. Soviets and the capitalist west became sworn enemies leading to the famous age of the cold war after they build a wall across the heart of Berlin and to say they fought beside each other as Allied Forces.
No matter who you are working with or how small the job is, have everything set in writing.
You need a bit of luck
Being at the right place and right time is not something we can plan ahead. Both the World War and the Internet business stories are riddled with instances of how people had luck on their side. This is not something that you can have a hand in, but you can increase the odds by grabbing more opportunities.
All the technology and power would be of no use if you won’t take into account the above points
The might of the fascist powers military-wise wasn’t inferior to that of the allies, for all we know it might have even been better. Yet finally victory belonged to those who took their chances, were persistent and those who held on.
Plan your efforts, set small goals and achieve them while keeping track of the bigger picture and most importantly be patient.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing, one fresh
idea and you can change the world, keep
up the great work.
